♥ - family headcanon for Majors Houlihan and Burns
Thank you for your request. Here ya go!
Margaret:
We know that Margaret's father is an asshole very stern and overbearing. We also know that Margaret's mother is an alcoholic and kleptomaniac. Her mother's issues are caused by her tumultuous marriage to Alvin and also because she has untreated/ undiagnosed Bipolar Disorder (Manic Depression). Margaret also has a younger sister. Growing up they were very competitive with each other, each one trying to win their father's approval and revel in how "strong" they could be. Their father wanted boys, but when that didn't happen, he decided to push them as far as he could without them being officially seen as soldiers.
They had to learn to emotionally compartmentalize their feelings, but they couldn't wear boy clothes, and they couldn't play sports, but they had to run naked in the dead of winter to stay physically fit, but then curtsy when Generals would visit their home??? They had to be both little soldiers and dainty girls, and neither of those things were coming from the Houlihan girls internally.
Margaret continued to dream of a high rank in the military and to have her father's love and approval, while her younger sister didn't aim to go as far in the military, and learned much sooner to seek the things she wanted...a family.
Frank:
Frank was physically and emotionally abused by both parents, who would also encourage his older brother to do the same. His mother and he are much closer than he and his father were. His mom...kinda...emotionally parentified him so she could have a partner who liked her. His parents don't have a good marriage. They won't divorce but they REALLY should. So Frank's mom was/is emotionally incestuous with him. Frank was one of those kids, who everyone thought was kind of "off" but because he grew up in the 30s no one was really looking out for the very obvious signs that he was in an unhealthy household and was in desperate need of help.
Frank and Louise married strictly because he got her pregnant. It was a shotgun wedding. Frank purposely targeted her because he knew how well off her father was, and he wanted that money. Thankfully, he father seemed to realize this and kept everything in either his name or Louise's so Frank can't get shit. Frank cheats on her on the regular. Even Frank's kids don't like him. Fractured and unhealthy relationships all around.
He needs therapy...so much therapy.

my boss asked me if I had any tattoos, I said no, but told him about almost getting :): when I was at a party in college, and he just sighed and said "I never expect you to have as wild of a life as you do" and I'm like bro... that's your barrier for wild?

Hey! I did this esquizoafective symbol, you are free to use it for everything you do, like icons, wallpaper, or another things!
The curves represents the bipolar disorder, and the triangle represents the psicosis.
The vertical line that is the tallest, on the first extreme of the triangle, is the maniac episode, the lowest vertical line, on the another extreme represents the depression, and the horizontal line down, is the euthimia!
:D hope someone like it

While I have no hate towards the relatability that people with bipolar have with Gangle this episode, I would also like to point out some love to the idea of Gangle having BPD instead and some of my reasonings as a fellow borderline myself.
The main difference between bipolar and borderline mood swings is the amount of time they last. Bipolar typically lasts weeks to months. What we see with Gangle is way more similar to BPD where the mood swings last for a lot shorter of a time period, typically from several hours to several days.
Secondly, how said mood swings are triggered. Bipolar mood swings tend to be a case of adding up factors but the actual turning point is pretty random. BPD on the other hand is triggered by feelings of rejection. And when do we see Gangle's happy masks commonly falling off? When shes getting shit from the others!
Then, Gangle's manic episode. It was an amazing portrayal of a manic episode, and was scarily relatable to my own experience (with manic-like BPD mood swing symptoms) . I love how this episode shows how people don't give as much sympathy to those with mental illnesses when symptoms can no longer be romanticized or hidden away. I also think that this is especially prominent for those with cluster B personality disorders, where your mental illness is constantly demonized.
And then there are so many scenes and moments that Gangle had that are just...textbook BPD symptoms. Examples of these are:
the dissociation episodes, those are incredibly common with this disorder and they happen at the peak of mood swings too and they are INTENSE.
The constant masks. Gangle has a very interesting character symbol where no matter what, they are wearing a mask, for the sake of there isnt a real face. It is really relatable to the depersonalization that a lot of people with BPD experience where it feels like no matter what you do you are just putting on a new mask.
Not as bad as Ragatha, Gangle is a people pleaser, you see that whenever they get tormented, she never once defends herself
And finally, the fear that everyone hates you once your episode ends and the belief that you don't deserve any good friends or close relationships that leads you to self isolate and not reach out. (Fuck man props to Zooble I dream of a friend like that)

depression pride flag for the people suffering from depression who should be proud of themselves to still be alive
ive seen a few depression pride flag ideas floating around but i wanted one inspired by the semicolon project, the semicolon sol vindictus, and the disability pride flag
more design notes under the readmore
started with the grey base that the disability pride flag uses as a representation of how depression itself feels, darkness
the semicolon sol vindictus is a symbol for hope against that darkness, that the future is certain even if times are difficult
the six semicolons are also representative of the various forms depression can take, major depressive disorder (mdd) and atypical depression, bipolar disorder, seasonal affective disorder, persistent depression disorder (pdd), premenstrual dysphoric disorder and post partum depression (ppd), and the rainbow of colors is itself representative of situational depression that can be the result of being rejected for being queer but also is representative of comorbidities with other disabilities which is why its color picked from the disability pride flag
and the white semicolon is based on the color white symbolizing invisible disabilities on the disability pride flag and the symbol for continuing your life

Are there proper ways to write characters spiraling into violent madness without going full Hollywood stereotype?
Thanks for asking! Here are some tips:
Research: Before writing about madness, research various mental health conditions and how they manifest. Understanding the nuances of conditions such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, or psychosis can help you portray the descent into madness more realistically.
Show the descent: Instead of suddenly plunging your character into madness, show a gradual decline. Start with subtle changes in behavior or thoughts that become increasingly erratic over time. This gradual progression will make the transformation feel more believable.
Internal conflict: Explore the internal struggles of your character as they grapple with their deteriorating mental state. Show the conflict between their rational mind and the irrational thoughts or impulses taking over. This can create empathy for the character and make their descent more compelling.
Symbolism: Use symbolism and metaphor to convey the character's mental state without being too literal. Show their inner turmoil through imagery, dreams, or hallucinations that reflect their psychological struggles.
Character complexity: Avoid portraying the character solely as a "madman" or "madwoman." Instead, develop them as complex individuals with hopes, fears, and motivations beyond their descent into madness—or that consume them and drive their descent. This will make them more relatable and humanise their struggle.
External triggers: Explore the external factors contributing to the character's descent into madness, such as trauma, stress, or societal pressures. These triggers can help contextualise their behavior and add depth to their storyline.
POV: Consider using multiple points of view to provide insight into how other characters perceive the protagonist's descent into madness. This can add layers to the narrative and highlight the impact of their actions on those around them.
Avoid clichés: Steer clear of clichéd tropes commonly associated with madness, such as talking to imaginary voices or engaging in random acts of violence for no apparent reason. Though these are symptoms for some, it can be helpful to focus on depicting the unique experiences and challenges faced by your character.
Humanise the consequences: Show the real-life consequences of the character's actions, both for themselves and those around them. This can include the emotional toll on loved ones, legal repercussions, or the character's own feelings of guilt and remorse.
Subjective narrative: If you're writing from the first person perspective, immerse the reader in the character's deteriorating mental state by crafting a subjective narrative that reflects their inner turmoil and warped perspective. Use vivid, sensory language to describe their experiences, conveying a sense of dazed confusion, spiraling thoughts, and disorientation. Make use of fragmented thoughts, disjointed imagery, and stream-of-consciousness techniques to create a narrative that feels almost like a fever dream, drawing readers into the character's unraveling psyche. By making the reader feel as if they are experiencing the madness firsthand, you can create a more immersive and impactful portrayal of the character's descent.
Hope this helped! Happy writing ❤

all nine of the stretch goal designs for this campaign - I am not sure how many goals we will be able to reach but there will come a point where I won't be able to do any more goals unless I get fulfillment help, so we'll see if it gets to that point and if I can get help! below the cut are the names, info, and artist statements for each plushie! I may end up changing the names as I am still not sure about ash, sandy, kelly, and luca, but let me know if you like them!
Tristan The Depression Raccoon: Tristan’s plushie will come with a removable hoodie accessory! He loves cozy video games like animal crossing and stardew valley. There are not many widely used symbols for depression that I could find, so I chose Tristan's colors based on how my depression makes me feel, bruised and cold.
Ash the Anxiety Bunny Moth: Ash’s plushie will have fluffy moth antennae and removable magnetic wings similar to Bug’s plush! They love to visit the home depot lights section when their friends are with them! I chose gray and yellow for the main body colors because my anxiety personally deals with uncertainty and things out of my control. The green comes from one of the anxiety flags created by Beyond MOGAI. To add moth features was a suggestion I got that I thought fit very well!!
Sandy the Obsessive Compulsive Disorder Kitty: Sandy is an artist and loves to draw and paint landscapes! Her wings will be attached via magnet, similar to Bug’s wings. The colors of her design are based on the OCD flag created by lucellion, with spirals in her paws to represent repetitive thought processes.
Melon the Sensory Processing Disorder Opossum: Melon is a silly opossum who has bat wings! Melon’s wings will be attached via magnet, similar to Bug’s wings. Melon’s colors are inspired by the SPD pride flag created by Beyond MOGAI.
Jazz the Borderline Personality Disorder Kitty: Jazz is a tortoiseshell kitty that loves to read!! Jazz’s plush will come with a pvc charm of the hand of Eris symbol for you to put on xer collar if you choose! The colors are loosely based on the BPD flag created with community input by ptsdsafe on tumblr.
Kelly the Schizospec Axolotl: kelly is an axolotl who is studying chemistry and loves science! kelly’s design is inspired by the Schizospec flag, created with community input and organized by schizosupport on tumblr. They will have a collar tag once again made of PVC featuring the associated double sided arrow symbol.
Em the Bipolar Disorder Chimera: Em is a chimera kitty who has dragon wings and a snake tail! One side of the snake tail is smiling, the other frowning. This takes inspiration from the :): symbol often associated with Bipolar disorder.
Cy the Irritable Bowel Syndrome Otter: Cy is a happy little otter griffin! They love to sculpt and craft and sew! Cy’s color pallet is based on the assortment of medications I take for my own IBS symptoms.
Luca the Dyslexia Fox: Luca is a dancer and loves to perform! Their design and colors are loosely based on the infinity heart+ moon and star symbol that is often found on dyslexia flags. they will have L and R embroidered on their paws, which was a suggestion I was given.

bipolar spectrum flag! (for anyone with bipolar i or ii, schizoaffective disorder, or cyclothymia)
we wanted to make something that was recognizable without being too busy and had colors that recognizably conveyed mania and depression as well as the emotional intensity that comes with them
elaboration on stripe meanings and blank version under the cut :3
each stripe has two meanings; the top and bottom stripes have meanings related to community and recovery and the middle four stripes relate to specific symptoms.
Yellow: Healing and diversity; healing in whatever way is best for you and the diversity within the bipolar spectrum (explicitly incl bipolar i and ii, bipolar due to another medical condition, schizoaffective bipolar type and cyclothymia)
Orange: Hypomania and rapid cycling
Hot pink: Mania and psychosis
Indigo: Major depressive and mixed states
Blue: Minor (subclinical) depressive states and comorbidities
Sky blue: Support and acceptance; each of these coming from both within and outside of the community and especially as a subset of the mad/neurodivergent/disabled communities
The :): / smile-frown is a common symbol of bipolar
Tumblr media
@radiomogai @mad-pride (i think both of you are ok with being tagged for archival purposes but sorry if you aren't!)

pretty funny how if gale's arc had been actually meant to be some sort of symbolism for bipolar disorder it'd probably be considered so heavy handed as to be bad representation. but it wasn't and so no one even notices

After I get a producer, studio, network to fund my bipoc, qtipoc, & disabled futurism project. I plan to turn it into a book, comic, manga, web comic, light novel, & graphic novel series for bipoc qtipoc and disabled readers. A cartoon, tv show, movie series, animated series, & anime for bipoc qtipoc and disabled viewers. A table top rpg game for disabled qtipoc and bipoc players. As well as a video game series for disabled qtipoc and bipoc gamers.
Be sure to also like and reblog my bio and pinned post to boost it to disabled bipoc and or qtipoc mutuals.

L: *slow exhale*… Light, I’ve read the DSM-5. You’re experiencing mania
Light: …
Light’s internal dialogue: Nice try L, but you’ll never keep me from my future as the god of the new world. I am Kira, all powerful, a symbol of justice to the world and I will prevail. I have the Death Note and that is more than you will ever have-
L: Fine, we’ll do this the hard way.
L: HEY, YAGAMI-SAN! Is there a history of Personality disorders such as BPD or perhaps bipolar depression in your family? Because if so, I’d like to recommend that Light be evaluated by a psychologist-

Schizoaffective Flags
[PT: Schizoaffective Flags /End PT]
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I realized there weren't a lot of good schizoaffective flags, so I decided to make some. Disclaimer: I don't have schizoaffective disorder nor any type of schizospec/mood disorder.
The lavender in this flag comes from @schizosupport 's schizospec flag and is meant to represent the schizophrenic symptoms present in the disorder. The silver comes from the schizoaffective awareness ribbon. The symbol is a modified version of the one by @actuallyschizophrenic , meant to represent the ups and downs of mood disorders.
Bipolar-type Schizoaffective

The silver & lavender have the same meanings as in the general schizoaffective flag. Green is the color of one of the bipolar awareness ribbons, and is also present in both bipolar flags. Yellow is also in the original bipolar flag for "when someone isnt in an episode at all, and can also represent psychosis". The symbol is again a modified version of the one by @/actuallyschizophrenic, meant to mirror the bipolar symbol. Black and white is the color of another bipolar awareness ribbon; it also represents the, well, bipolar nature of this disorder.
Depressive-type Schizoaffective

The silver & lavender have the same meanings as in the general schizoaffective flag. The pink comes from these MDD flags. Blue is a color generally associated with depression. The symbol is again a modified version of @/actuallyschizophrenic's, with the arrows pointing downward to symbolize depression.
